The copasu (scientific name Theobroma grandiflora) for our copasu butter isgrown in the southern Peruvian Amazon outside the city of Puerto Maldonado, Madre de Dios, at Luis’ organic farm. Luis is the lovely man from EcoDely who turns our Jungle Cacao Peru beans – grown in Lucerna, 100 km further into the jungle – into our delicious cacao pastes, Chaska and Mamicha.
Growing a wide range of native jungle fruits and medicinal plants at his farm, Luis turns the copasu into both copasu paste (like cacao paste, but from copasu), copasu powder and copasu butter. The copasu butter is extracted by pressing copasu beans that have been fermented, dried, toasted, shelled and ground into a rough paste.
The copasu fruit, like cacao, is in the theobroma family of trees. Its hard outer shell is larger and more wood-like than cacao; its beans are larger and covered in a greater quantity of fleshy, white fruit. The resulting butter smells of strawberries, vanilla, chocolate, with a hint of coffee. It also has a higher fatty acid content than cacao butter and a lower melting point (30oC), so it turns easily into a pliable moisturiser when sat in a dish of hot water for a few minutes or when applied directly to the skin.
I’ve been using copasu butter as an all-over body lotion and lip balm for a year and adore it. You might already be familiar with cacao butter and its uses. Copasu butter is the same thing, just from the copasu fruit. Copasu butter contains antioxidants, phytosterols and essential fatty acids which are great for nourishing and restoring the skin. It smells and feels so great that the ritual of applying it after a bath or shower is a treat in itself.
NB: NOT AVAILABLE IN USA OR CANADA
“I absolutely love this copasu butter! After melting it in my hands, the creamy texture leaves my skin feeling incredibly soft and moisturised. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a luxurious and sustainable part of their skin care routine.”
